WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

Early May was warm, but in mid May temperature dropped below freezing point and became positive again on 24 May. The last snowstorm occurred on 22 May. Period from 1-20 June was cold, and rains were frequent in late June - early July.

Season temperature: cold
Season humidity: rainy
Date of 50% snow-cover: 27.05
Date of ice-break on rivers: 27.05
Date of final loss of snow: 5.06

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Maximal number of Barnacle Geese recorded during stop-over on the marshes from 21.05-5.06 was 20000. Several hundred thousand Dunlins passed northward from 26.05-5.06.
While spring was slightly later than normal, no sudden return of cold weather occurred and breeding conditions were favourable. Numbers of lemmings and predators were low on the seaside marshes. Only 3 records of Arctic Foxes were made in the begining of June. Nesting success of Barnacle Geese was 83% by the moment of peak hatching. Poaching, wide-scale egging and disturbance are principal factors negatively affecting waterfowl reproduction in the area.

Summary of fauna studies:

Observations were carried out on migration of Brent and Barnacle geese as well as on nesting ecology of the latter species. We searched for nests of and broods of geese. More than 300 nests of Barnacle Geese were surveyed and their position mapped. We recorded all species of birds and their status.
